Arsenic

Arsenic

 

 Uses

ˇ                   As a hardening agent in the manufacture of lead shot.

ˇ                   As a constituent of copper alloys (boiler tube plates and bronze for high temperature use.

ˇ                   As an ingredient of some solders.

ˇ                   In the manufacture of rat poison. insecticides. fungicides and weed killers.

 

Health effect of Chronic exposure:

ˇ                   Gastrointestinal : loss of appetite. Nausea , diarrhoea or constipation.

ˇ                   Nervous system -peripheral neuritis with burning and tenderness in the affected limbs and difficulty in walking.

ˇ                   Liver damage may proceed to cancer.

ˇ                   Skin -inflammation and dermatitis which may advance to ulceration. the skin may become pigmented with warty growths (hyporkeratoscs). Some of the warty growths may bcome malignant  at a later stage.

Mucous membranes -conjunctivitis. laryngitis. etc. and perforation of the nasal septum
